Dear All,
We have the enormous pleasure of being able to make an exclusive announcement, a privilege we share with our friends at www.thulestation.com, about a major development which will be of interest to all fans of The Thing and of the incredible work of illustrious effects company Amalgamated Dynamics Incorporated (ADI), who were responsible for the practical creature effects in The Thing (2011.) We were lucky enough to do a Q&A with founders Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis last year.
Many of us were dismayed by the replacement of Tom and Alec's wonderfully imaginative and skilfully constructed creature set pieces by digital counterparts in the final movie, especially after having viewed the many behind-the-scenes videos released by ADI. Seeing such phenomenal work go to waste filled our hearts with sadness. Even though the digital Things were praiseworthy in their own right, they were nevertheless felt by many fans to be out of place in The Thing universe, whose parameters were established in John Carpenter's 1982 masterpiece and in particular by the oozing, visceral qualities of Rob Bottin's astonishing practical creature effects. There is a larger concern here, that of the indiscriminate marginalisation of in-camera effects by CGI throughout the movie industry, irrespective of which technique is more appropriate for the portrayal of a given subject or setting.
Tom and Alec intend to do something about that, and without further ado, here is Alec's video greeting to Outpost #31 describing their plans:
From ADI: '"Harbinger Down: A Practical Creature FX Film", is a labor of love inspired by the overwhelmingly positive response from your site about ADI's work on THE THING 2011. The support that you and your members have given ADI has been truly tremendous and inspiring. So much so, Alec and Tom decided to do a film 'The Thing' inspired. Things they wanted to do on 'The Thing' will be put into effect. There will be no digital creatures in this film. Alec will write and direct. Tom will produce.
We'll be seeking 350K, but are hoping for more as it would help us in every aspect of the project. We want to prove that good movies don't have to cost 100 million dollars. We want to prove that there are non-traditional alternatives for filmmakers. We want to prove that practical creature effects still has a place in modern film-making.'
350K? By contemporary movie budgeting standards, this is a truly modest amount, and yet think of the possible payoff: a fantastic creature horror movie that shows us what we wanted to see in The Thing (2011) and provides a more fitting tribute to Bottin's seminal work. It may even spark a full-blown renaissance in practical creature effects, who knows? If anyone can do it, Tom and Alec can, so please show your support by contributing to their campaign.
